Accelerating air quality improvements in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area to protect public health and help inspire greater action on air pollution in other African cities
The Project
The Breathe Accra Project is a community-driven initiative aimed at improving air quality in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA). The project seeks to address the worsening air pollution problem in GAMA and its impact on public health, and also identify the vulnerable populations for targeted intervention.
The project's main goal is to ensure that hyperlocal air quality data is openly accessible to the public, empowering individuals and communities to take action to improve air quality in their neighborhoods. By providing real-time air quality information through a user-friendly map interface, the Breathe Accra Project seeks to raise awareness about the air pollution problem and encourage behavioral change for improved air quality.
In addition to providing air quality information, the Breathe Accra Project also fosters local capacity for monitoring and managing air quality. The project engages local communities, corporate organizations, and municipal assemblies to work together towards achieving the common goal of clean air in Accra. The project also builds the capacity of municipal health authorities to mount surveillance for air pollution-related diseases in GAMA.
The Breathe Accra Project will continuously share best practices and lessons learnt for replication of the project by other African cities.
